A desert camp fire pit in the Agafay Desert at sunset

The Agafay Desert is the closest desert to Marrakech, and that's exactly why it's so popular. You can leave the medina after lunch, ride a quad or a camel across the hills, watch the sunset, eat dinner under the stars and be back in your riad the same night.

This guide covers the practical side: how far it is, the ways to get there, how long to plan for and when to go. It's written by our team in Agafay, who make this drive every day.

How far is the Agafay Desert from Marrakech?

Agafay starts roughly 30 to 40 kilometres south-west of Marrakech. Depending on where in the desert you're going and the traffic leaving the city, the drive takes about 40 to 60 minutes. The road heads out past the edge of the city towards Lalla Takerkoust lake, and the landscape changes quickly from olive groves and villages to bare, pale hills.

Is Agafay a real desert?

Yes, but it's a stone desert, not a sand desert. Instead of golden dunes you'll see rolling rocky hills, flat plateaus and dry riverbeds with almost no vegetation, and the High Atlas mountains rising on the horizon. Some people expect the Sahara and are surprised; most end up loving the scale of it and the mountain views. If sand dunes are a must, you'll need a multi-day trip to Merzouga or Zagora, 7 to 9 hours' drive from Marrakech.

Ways to get to Agafay

1. An organised trip with transport included

This is how most visitors go, because there's no public transport into the desert and the camps and tracks aren't signposted. A trip with transport means someone collects you, drives you to the activities and brings you back after dinner.

On our trips, pickup is free from seven meeting points in central Marrakech: Cyber Parc Arsat Moulay Abdeslam, Bab Agnaou, Hotel Amani, Jardin Majorelle, Cinéma Colisée, Al Kabir Hotel and Aswak Assalam. If you'd rather be collected at your hotel or riad door, you can book private VIP transport instead. Riads deep inside the medina can't always be reached by car; in that case the driver meets you at the nearest accessible point. See all trips on our Agafay from Marrakech page.

2. Taxi

You can hire a taxi in Marrakech to drive you to a specific camp in Agafay. Agree the price, including the return trip and waiting time, before you leave, because a taxi dropping you in the desert at night won't wait for free and you won't find another one out there. This works best if you've booked a dinner or activity at a named camp and know its exact location.

3. Driving yourself

With a rental car you can drive to Agafay in under an hour. The main roads are paved; the last stretch to many camps is a dirt track that a normal car can handle slowly in dry weather. Download offline maps first, because mobile signal can be patchy, and avoid driving the dirt tracks after dark if you don't know them.

How much time do you need?

A half day is enough. The most popular plan is an afternoon trip: leave Marrakech in the mid-afternoon, do one or two activities, watch the sunset, have dinner and drive back. Our trips leave at 3:00 PM and take about 4 to 6 hours in total, depending on the activities:

A morning trip is possible but you miss the sunset, which is the highlight for most people.

Best time of year to visit

  • March to May: warm days, cool evenings, green patches after winter rain. One of the best times.
  • June to August: very hot in the afternoon, often above 35 °C. Go late in the day and drink plenty of water.
  • September to November: pleasant temperatures and clear skies. Also one of the best times.
  • December to February: mild sunny days, cold nights that can drop close to 5 °C, and snow on the Atlas. Bring a warm jacket for dinner.

Day trip or overnight?

Some camps in Agafay offer overnight stays in tents, and they can be lovely for stargazing. But you don't need to sleep in the desert to experience it. The afternoon-and-dinner format gives you the activities, the sunset and the night sky over dinner, and you're back in Marrakech in time to sleep in your own bed. For most visitors with a few days in the city, that's the better use of time. Our trips are evening trips only: we bring you back to Marrakech after dinner.

Combining Agafay with other sights

Agafay sits close to Lalla Takerkoust lake, a reservoir at the foot of the Atlas that you'll pass or see on some routes. The Ourika Valley and the Atlas villages around Imlil are separate day trips in other directions, so it's easier to do them on a different day: mountains in the morning, desert another afternoon. Avoid squeezing Agafay into a day that already includes a long drive, because the sunset is worth arriving relaxed for.

What to bring

  • A scarf or buff for dust and sun, and sunglasses.
  • Closed shoes if you're riding a quad or buggy.
  • A warm layer for the evening, in every season except high summer.
  • Water and cash. Many places in the desert don't take cards.
  • Your phone charged for photos. The sunset light is worth it.

What to do once you're there

The main activities in Agafay are quad biking, buggy driving, camel rides, sunset viewing and dinner with live music or a fire show. Read our guides to quad biking near Marrakech, Agafay camel rides and buggy rides to choose what suits you.
